To say I’m a keen golfer would be an understatement. I’m absolutely hooked (no pun intended!) and I’ve been fortunate enough to play rounds all over the world. But if you were to ask me for my favourite golfing location, nothing can quite top Algarve Villas. For anyone considering heading to Portugal for a golfing trip, I cannot recommend the Algarve enough. And if you are a first timer, here’s my take on what you can expect, including recommendations on where to stay and which golf courses would be best suited to you.

What To Expect From The Algarve

Your experience will depend slightly on which month you intend to visit. July and August are the most popular times, so you will have to deal with larger crowds if you want the hottest temperatures. It’s common for the temperature to top 30 degrees in these months, but I find the best time for a golfing trip is either side of this period. April-June and September-October still offer warm sunny days but without temperatures straying into the 30s.

Outside of the weather, there really is something for everyone in the Algarve, which is why I rate it so highly. While the centre tends to be where the partygoers head, it’s also where the most luxurious hotels and villas are situated. 

I’d say the west is the more scenic side of the Algarve. Expect postcard-like cliffs, ancient architecture and a more relaxed atmosphere. The east is where I’d head if you like to see places through the eyes of locals. You’ll be surrounded by great, authentic Portuguese restaurants and quieter towns.

Where Is Best For Golf In The Algarve? 

There are over 40 golf courses in the Algarve, with options situated all across the region. As mentioned above, the central Algarve is home to some of the most luxurious properties, but it’s also home to what I’d say are the best golf courses. If you were to ask me for a specific area, I’d recommend heading to Quinta do Lago, which is around a 20-minute drive from Vilamoura.

There are three main golf courses in Quinta do Lago, and I’ve had the pleasure of playing at all three, so here’s my summary of each.

Quinta do Lago South Course

Most golfers would agree that the South Course is Quinta do Lago’s best golf course, perhaps even the best course in the whole of the Algarve. But it’s also one of the most challenging courses you’re likely to experience, so it may not be suitable for more casual golfers with high handicaps. If you are a low to mid handicap golfer, head to the South Course to enjoy one of the most picturesque courses you’ll find in all of Europe.

Quinta do Lago Laranjal Course

Laranjal has earned a strong reputation for being one of the best-maintained courses in the Algarve. The course itself isn’t quite as punishing as Quinta do Lago South Course, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a difficult course, which makes it great for all handicaps. 

Quinta do Lago North Course

The North Course’s wide fairways make it the best option for golfers with high handicaps, and this would probably be my choice if you’re heading with a group of varying abilities. The better golfers will still be challenged by the difficult greens, while lesser players shouldn’t find themselves straying into the bunkers too often.

Where To Stay In Quinta do Lago?

If your budget allows, I’d definitely recommend staying in Quinta do Lago itself rather than in nearby areas. This should leave you a short taxi ride from all three courses mentioned above. If you’re looking to relax in the evenings after a day playing golf, Quinta do Lago offers a more peaceful vibe than the likes of Vilamoura, with vibrant nightlife substituted for high-quality restaurants.

I recently had the pleasure of staying in the Four Seasons Country Club, which is located close to the golf courses and within walking distance of the main shopping centre. I couldn’t recommend the Four Seasons enough, and it’s definitely worth checking out if you want to experience Quinta do Lago in luxury.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a keen golfer, a round in the Algarve should definitely be on your bucket list. Great weather all year round, stunning courses and a varied nightlife mean you’ve got everything for a great trip. Whether it’s a couple's thing or a fun-filled stag do, I think you’ll struggle to top a golfing retreat in this beautiful region.
