Porto's Main Historical Neighborhoods

It is in the neighborhoods that the true identity of the city, of the people, is known, and it is even the neighborhoods that make Porto what it is today: one of the best European destinations today.

Sé neighborhood

This neighborhood was very disadvantaged, with a lot of crime, prostitution and various social problems, but don't be alarmed! Nowadays it is a much more sophisticated area. At the top, imposing, the Porto Cathedral. Its construction in Romanesque style dates back to the twelfth century, although over time it has been subject to enlargements and renovations until the final alteration as early as the twentieth century. An unavoidable point of tourist attraction, also won by the beautiful view of the city that the steep slope allows visitors, has recently gained a new attraction.

The Fernandina Wall is in this neighborhood and it is possible to walk, having before your eyes what will be one of the best views of the historic center and the river.

Miragaia Neighborhood

In Miragaia everyone knows each other. This little bit that exists in Porto, was the nature that made it. Is identity, spirit, sharing, conviviality, legacy, tradition, home to many people enough to describe what you can find here?

For some years the residents of this neighborhood felt wronged before the Porto Council for not giving them the necessary conditions to live. There were many requests from the inhabitants, from improved sanitation to lack of investment. The lack of investment made young people move away from where they were born. There being no new opportunities, their destiny was another.

Today conditions are better and there are several restaurants in the area where you can taste Porto's main snack, Francesinha.

Ribeira Neighborhood

The Ribeira neighborhood is one of the most important places when visiting Porto's historic center. As its name implies, it is the area situated on the river bank.

Here you will find the famous small houses with colorful facades that attract thousands of visitors each year. Esplanades and cafes abound along the river bank which make the perfect end of the day with a privileged view of the D. Luis I bridge. On the other side of the river you can see the Port wine cellars, and top of the hill, Serra do Pilar.

Cedofeita Neighborhood

This neighborhood is one of the coolest in Porto. The neighborhood is considered one of the best to discover the "vibrant" second largest city in the country. The restaurants that bring the world's food, museums and contemporary art galleries are the highlights of a neighborhood that is one of the most visited in Porto.

During your holidays in Porto, take the opportunity to keep aware of all the events that happen daily. A good choice is to join some tours in Porto with specialist guides that know the city and its neighborhoods like nobody.
