Demand for Unmanned Ground Vehicles Set to Skyrocket in North America in Coming Years

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) states that around 2.439% of the global gross domestic product (GDP) was allocated to the military sector. As per the institute, military expenditure in the U.K. and India surged from $56.856 billion in 2019 to $59.238 billion in 2020 and from $71.469 billion in 2019 to $72.887 billion in 2020, respectively. The increasing military expenditure, in developed as well as developing countries, is resulting in the large-scale deployment of advanced products, such as unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), in search and rescue, combat support, and transportation applications.

In addition, the increasing advancements in autonomous UGV technology is also expected to strengthen the unmanned ground vehicles market during 2021–2030. According to P&S Intelligence, the market generated $3 billion revenue in 2020. Autonomous UGVs are generally used in rugged terrain or places that are inaccessible to humans, and locations with harsh weather conditions, as they reduce the possibility of harm to security personnel. At present, UGVs are being integrated with machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, so that they can adapt to the surroundings without external assistance and adjust strategies as per the surroundings.

In the coming years, wheeled UGVs will be preferred over tracked, legged, and hybrid variants, owing to their increasing usage in terrain with few obstacles. These UGVs are used in commercial, law enforcement, military, and federal law enforcement applications. In the forthcoming years, the use of UGVs by law enforcement agencies, such as the Russian Police (politsiya), Russia and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), U.S., will soar, as they will be required for explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) and intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR).

Geographically, the North American region led the unmanned ground vehicles market in the recent past, wherein the U.S. adopted the higher number of UGVs, as it is one of the leading producers, exporters, and consumers of military systems in the world. Moreover, the increasing number of contracts being awarded by the U.S. and Canada to prominent UGV manufacturers for the delivery of combat-capable UGVs will further boost the sales of these vehicles in the region. For example, the U.S. has deployed numerous UGVs along the Mexican border to manage gang-related violence without causing collateral damage.

Thus, the surging military expenditure and increasing advancements in autonomous UGV technology are expected to encourage the adoption of UGVs in the foreseeable future.
