If you are engaged in construction or plant operations in the UK, then your CPCS or CSCS card is important for your job. It certifies that you possess adequate health and safety knowledge and that you are qualified to work on-site safely. These cards are given an expiry date, and once the date passes, you are required to renew them in order to continue working. The renewal rule has undergone changes over the last few years, and the changes for 2024 and 2025 have just come in. This guide has been designed to take you through the renewal process.
When You Can Renew Your Card
It is crucial for you to be aware of the exact period when you are permitted to start the renewal process. In the case of the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card, you will be able to apply for renewal three months before the expiry date. If the card has expired, you may still renew it within up to five years, provided that you are still complying with the renewal criteria. However, if your card has expired for more than five years, you will be unable to renew through the regular process, and you will have to retake the theory and practical tests.
For CSCS cards, the renewal period is half a year prior to expiration and half a year after. In most cases, the newly issued card will be valid for another five years. The one exception for 2025 is the CSCS Labourer card, which now comes with an updated set of rules. The first Labourer card that you receive now has a validity of only two years, after which it must be renewed. After that, you may renew for a period of five years, provided that you can demonstrate continuous employment in a labour role.
New Renewal Requirements for 2025
The CPCS renewal process underwent a significant change in 2024 and has been carried over to 2025. The formerly existing CPCS renewal test has been scrapped, and in its place, an online CPD course has been introduced. The price of this course is £28, and it includes 5 learning modules, such as safer plant operation, sustainability, updated laws, and new technology. The course is compatible with any device, and it has to be finished before the renewal application is submitted. This new CPD makes the process easier, as you won't be required to pass individual tests for each category on your card. Additionally, CPCS has launched a digital logbook that can be utilized for documentation of your work hours. The digital logbook will be treated as proof of competence and will facilitate your renewal process.
In addition, there is a significant change in rules for the workers who had their CPCS Blue cards issued through the Industry Accreditation path. This route has now been discontinued. You must complete a Competence Interview or Vocational Qualification for renewal of the card. All these processes have to be finished prior to the renewal deadline. The HS&E test for the Labourer card, which is a prerequisite to get the card, is now valid for three years, so you won't have to retake it that often.
Passing the Health and Safety Test
A valid Health, Safety, and Environment test is mandatory for both schemes. For CPCS renewal, the successful completion of the NOCN or CITB HS&E test within the last two years is required. The same rule applies in the case of CSCS card renewal; however, the test type depends on the job role. Site operatives are to take the Operatives test. Skilled workers are going to take the Specialist test. Supervisors and managers will undertake the MAP test. In the case you hold a CSCS Labourer card, the HS&E test you passed for it is valid for three years.
Demonstrating Your Practical Experience
To renew a CPCS card, it is necessary to show that you are still using the plant or machinery. Submitting your logbook, which keeps a record of your working hours and the tasks you have completed, is one way to do this. The digital logbook is now the most preferred method and prevents information from being missed. In the absence of a logbook, you can opt for a practical test or an on-site assessment instead. If you have achieved an NVQ or SVQ in the right category lately, that qualification could also serve as proof of competence.
Filling out the Renewal Application
After your CPD, tests, and experience are ready, you fill out the CPCS F1/3 renewal form. This form requests your personal information, your card number, and your proof of experience. If you are working for someone else, your employer can endorse the form to validate your logbook hours. If you are self-employed, you can sign it yourself only if you meet the scheme's requirements. After completing the form, you can either email it to CPCS or post it.
For CSCS renewal, the procedure is entirely online. You access your CSCS account, upload your HS&E test result and qualification proof, pay the renewal fee, and submit the application. After approval, your new card is dispatched through the mail and generally arrives within three to ten working days.
What to Do If Your Card Has Expired
Renewal is still an option if your CPCS card expired less than five years ago, provided you complete CPD, and present experience proof. However, if it is more than five years, you will have to retake the entire theory and practical tests once more. If your CSCS card was invalidated for over six months, you may not be able to renew it and will thus need to apply for a new card instead. Also, if there has been a change in your job role since the last card was issued, CSCS will require fresh proof that corresponds with your current occupation.
