Fractional CO2

Fractional CO2 is a relatively recent phenomenon. It is a treatment based on fractionated carbon dioxide laser. While it maintains the traditional effectiveness of the carbon dioxide laser, it is nowhere nearly as harsh on the skin. Some herald is as one of the most complete and useful skincare treatment options available.

Conditions treated by fractional CO2

Several skin related conditions can be treated with the help of fractional CO2. The list includes fine lines and wrinkles which are generally the first signs of aging at the face. Uneven skin texture and uneven skin tone too can be corrected with this treatment. Fractional CO2 is also a useful fix for acne trouble as it clears the clogged pores and gets rid of the bacteria that causes acne. Scarring caused by trauma, surgery and acne can be treated with fractional CO2. It is also useful for many pigmentation problems such as Melasma and Sun Spots. It is also ideal for freckles and blemishes.

Who is a good candidate for treatment?

Most people with the above mentioned conditions are good candidates. However, certain aspects needs to be considered prior to getting the treatment. People who tend to heal slower than usual should consult with a dermatologist before getting the treatment. Those who have used isotrentinion or Accutane in the last six months period should not get this treatment. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant or are nursing a baby should not get Fractional CO2. Currently there is no study that shows any direct ill effects on the baby or the mother and this is purely for the purpose of caution. Not enough data available on whether or not the treatment has some harmful effects in such a case.

How does it work?

The principle of action is skin resurfacing. It works be making tiny holes in the top layer of the skin with the help of fractionated laser. This starts the healing process immediately and the damaged skin crusts away over the next few days and healthier skin replaces it. The levels of collagen and elastin in the skin also improve which make the skin supple and flexible. A much approved appearance can be seen after the treatment has been completed.

Is it painful?

The procedure is almost pain free and a pinch similar to that of a light rubber band snapping against the skin can be experienced. To make it further comfortable, topical anesthetics are applied which numb down the pain almost completely. Cool air may also be blown during the treatment to further reduce the discomfort.

How many sessions are needed?

The exact number of sessions needed varies with each case. The condition and its extent as well as how the person receiving the treatment responds to it determines a lot. Mostly five to six treatments can do the job. However, this number can vary a fair bit in individual cases. Your doctor can best guide you in this matter after taking all the relevant aspects into consideration.

Side effects and downtime

The side effects are mild and generally limited to tenderness to touch in the treated area, some swelling and redness and itching. These issues generally last between a few hours to up to two days. No additional treatment is needed and these side effects subside on their own. In rare cases, bruising can take place in the treated area. This like other side effects is temporary. Photosensitivity is developed after the treatment and avoiding the sun is very important. It can last form a couple of days to a couple of weeks. If you need to go out during the day hours, ensure that you wear a large hat and clothing should cover all the treated areas to ensure that the UV rays do not harm the skin. Wearing a sunscreen with a high SPF also helps a lot in this condition. There is usually no downtime after the treatment and a person can continue his or her daily routine without any interruption. Rest after the treatment is not a bad idea since it can help you in recovering quicker. Some matters of routine like working out or application of makeup may be restricted for a day or two after the treatment.
